What is image cropping, and why is it useful?

Cropping removes the parts of an image you don't need, so the subject stands out and the picture fits the space it's going into. It also makes files smaller, because fewer pixels means less data. A good crop can turn a cluttered snapshot into a clean profile photo, a product shot or a thumbnail without opening an editor.

Common Uses

Profile pictures

Crop a square around a face so it looks right in the small circles used by social and work apps.

Social media and video

Cut a photo to the shape a platform expects, such as a wide thumbnail or a square post, without stretching it.

Product and listing photos

Remove empty space around an item and give every listing the same shape for a clean, consistent shop.

Screenshots and documents

Keep only the part you need and leave out toolbars, personal details or anything that isn't relevant.

Aspect Ratios and When to Use Them

An aspect ratio is the relationship between an image's width and height. Locking a ratio keeps your selection in that shape, so the result fits its destination without stretching or extra borders.

Free

Drag to select any shape you like. Best when you just want to trim the edges of a photo or screenshot.

1:1 (square)

Profile photos, avatars, app icons and square social posts.

4:3 and 3:2

Classic photo shapes. 3:2 matches most cameras, and 4:3 matches many phones and presentation slides.

16:9 (widescreen)

Video thumbnails, banners, slides and anything shown on a widescreen display.

Custom

Type any ratio, such as 5:4 for prints or 3:1 for a header image, and the selection keeps that shape as you drag.

File Upload vs. Paste Input

Upload files

Best for images saved on your device. Drag them onto the upload area or choose them, up to 10 at once. You can also paste a copied image straight from your clipboard.

Paste base64

Best for images that live in code, such as CSS, HTML or API responses. Paste a data URI or the raw base64 text, or even raw SVG markup. Valid data is detected and previewed automatically.

Either way, you can download the cropped image or copy it as Base64.

Your Images Stay on Your Device

Everything on this page runs in your browser. Your images are never uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for personal photos, ID scans, screenshots and unreleased designs. It's also fast, because there's no upload or download wait, and it keeps working even if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping happens in your browser using the canvas. Your images are never sent to a server and aren't saved, so they disappear when you refresh or close the page.
How do I crop an image?
Add an image, then drag the corner and edge handles to resize the selection and drag inside it to move it. You can also drag on the image to draw a new selection. The live preview updates as you go. When you're happy, click Crop Image, then download the result.
How do I crop to an exact shape, like a square?
Choose a ratio such as 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 3:2, or enter your own under Custom. The selection keeps that shape while you resize it. To get an exact pixel width, enter it under Resize to width.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. Drag the handles with your finger, pinch to zoom and use Pan to move around a zoomed image. The handles are larger on touch screens so they're easy to grab.
Can I crop several images at once?
Yes, up to 10. Pick each image from the thumbnails to set its own crop, then click Crop Image once. The chosen ratio and output format apply to all of them, and Download Result saves each cropped image.
Will cropping reduce the quality?
Cropping itself doesn't lower quality, because it keeps the original pixels. Saving as JPG or WebP compresses the result, which you can control with the quality slider. PNG is lossless. Saving as JPG turns transparent areas white.
Can I crop SVG images?
Yes. SVG files are cropped and saved as a regular image such as PNG. Because SVG has no fixed pixel size, small crops are drawn larger automatically, or you can set the exact width yourself.
