Compress PDF Files

Reduce file size while keeping your pages sharp. Fast, free, and entirely in your browser.

Works best on scanned documents and photo-heavy PDFs. Text-heavy files like statements and invoices, which have little embedded image data, will see smaller reductions.

Compression level

Actual reduction depends on content. Scanned pages benefit most, and already-optimised text PDFs may change very little.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Your PDFs are compressed in your browser. They are never sent to a server and aren't saved, so they disappear when you refresh or close the page.
Will compression ruin the quality of my PDF?
Not at sensible settings. Text and vector artwork are left untouched, so they stay sharp and selectable. Only images and scans are recompressed. Best Quality keeps them closest to the original, while Smallest File trades a little image detail for a much smaller file.
Why didn't my file get much smaller?
It depends what's in the PDF. Scanned pages and photos compress a lot, because that's where most of a typical PDF's size lives. A file that's mostly text, such as a statement, invoice or contract, has little image data to begin with, so there's less to remove. After compressing, the tool explains why a result was small when that happens.
Which compression level should I choose?
Balanced is a good starting point for most files. Choose Best Quality for documents you'll print or zoom into, and Smallest File when you need to fit an email or upload limit. You can change the level and click Compress PDFs again without re-adding your files.
Can I compress more than one PDF at once?
Yes. Add as many PDFs as you like, up to 200 MB in total, and they're compressed one after another. Download All saves them in a single ZIP file.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password in the app you created the file with, then add the unlocked version here.
Is there a file size limit?
Each PDF can be up to 100 MB, with 200 MB allowed per batch. Because everything runs on your device, large files take longer to process.
