What is a text summarizer, and why use one?

A text summarizer shortens a long piece of writing to the sentences that matter most. It saves time on articles, reports, meeting notes, essays and emails you need to understand quickly, and gives you a starting point for notes or an abstract. This tool summarizes text online without AI, so the result is predictable: every sentence in the summary comes word for word from your original.

How Rule-Based Summarization Works

Instead of guessing, a rule-based summarizer follows a fixed method. Because it is just counting and ranking, it runs instantly in your browser and gives the same result every time for the same text.

1. Split into sentences

The text is divided into sentences. Abbreviations such as Dr. and e.g., initials and decimal numbers are handled so they don't cut a sentence in half.

2. Score the keywords

Common words like the, and and of are ignored. The remaining words are counted, and words that appear often are treated as the main topics.

3. Rank and pick sentences

Each sentence is scored by the keywords it contains, with a small boost for opening sentences. The best ones are kept until the summary reaches your chosen length.

4. Put them back in order

Chosen sentences are shown in their original order, so the summary reads the way the text does. Near-duplicates are skipped.

Choose a Summary Length

Short (10%)

About a tenth of the original. Good for a quick idea of what a long article or report covers.

Medium (20%)

About a fifth of the original. A balanced summary that keeps the main points and a little supporting detail.

Long (30%)

About a third of the original. Keeps more context, useful for longer documents or when you don't want to miss details.

Custom (5–90%)

Type any percentage. The summary stops at the sentence that gets closest, so the final length is shown next to your original word count.

Your Text Stays on Your Device

Everything on this page runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored, which makes it safe for drafts, contracts, research notes and anything else you'd rather keep to yourself. It's also fast, because there's no waiting on a server, and it keeps working even if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Supported Text Lengths and Formats

Paste or type plain text, or load a .txt file of up to 2 MB. The summarizer handles up to 300,000 characters at once, roughly 50,000 words, and needs at least about 30 words and two sentences to work with. It works best on prose such as articles, essays, reports and emails. Line breaks and paragraphs are kept, and lists or headings without full stops are treated as separate lines rather than sentences.

Works on Mobile and Desktop

The summarizer works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. On a large screen your text and summary sit side by side. On a phone they stack, and every button is sized for touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this text summarizer work?
It uses simple rules, not a language model. It splits your text into sentences, counts the important words, scores each sentence by how many of those words it contains, and keeps the highest-scoring ones in their original order.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The summary is made in your browser, on your own device. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored, so it is safe to use with drafts, reports and private documents.
Does it rewrite the text?
No. A rule-based summary is made of sentences taken straight from your text, unchanged. That keeps the wording accurate, but the sentences won't be rephrased or joined together.
How long can my text be?
Up to 300,000 characters, which is roughly 50,000 words. Text shorter than about 30 words, or with only one sentence, is too short to summarise. You can paste text or load a .txt file up to 2 MB.
What languages does it support?
It works best on English, because the list of words it ignores is English. Other languages that use spaces between words and full stops between sentences still work, but the results can be less accurate.
Why is my summary a different length from the percentage I chose?
Summaries are made of whole sentences, so the length lands close to your target rather than exactly on it. The word counts and compression shown under the summary are the real figures.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in your mobile browser with nothing to install, and the buttons are sized for touch. On a phone you can paste text from any app, or load a text file from your device.
