What is a URL slug, and why does it matter?

A slug is the readable part of a web address that names a page, like best-coffee-shops in example.com/blog/best-coffee-shops. A clean slug tells people and search engines what the page is about before it loads, is easy to read out or share, and doesn't break when pasted into a message. Titles are full of spaces, capitals, accents and punctuation that are unsafe or messy in a URL, so they need converting first.

How Slugification Works

Slugifying is a short chain of clean-up steps, all done instantly in your browser.

1. Clean the characters

Accents are removed (café becomes cafe), letters like ß and æ become ss and ae, apostrophes are dropped and & becomes and.

2. Find the words

Anything that isn't a letter or a number, such as spaces, punctuation and symbols, marks the end of a word. Repeated gaps collapse into one.

3. Apply your options

Optional stopwords are removed, the text is lowercased unless you preserve case, and the length is trimmed at a whole word if you set a limit.

4. Join with a separator

The words are joined with a hyphen, or the separator you chose. There are no leading or trailing separators and no doubles.

Your Text Stays on Your Device

Everything on this page runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored, which makes it safe for unpublished titles, product names and anything else you'd rather keep to yourself. It's also instant, because there's no server to wait for. It's also fast, because there's no waiting on a server, and it keeps working even if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a URL slug?
A slug is the last part of a web address that identifies a page, such as best-coffee-shops in example.com/blog/best-coffee-shops. It is usually made from the page title, in lowercase, with words joined by hyphens.
What makes a good SEO-friendly slug?
Short, lowercase and descriptive. Use the main words of the page, separate them with hyphens, and avoid accents, symbols and dates that will go out of date. Many sites aim for under 60 characters, which the Max length option can enforce.
Should I remove stopwords from slugs?
It is optional. Removing words like the, and and of makes a slug shorter, for example art-deal instead of the-art-of-the-deal. Keep them if the shorter version reads oddly or changes the meaning. If every word is a stopword, the tool keeps them all.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the usual choice for URLs, and search engines treat them as word separators. Underscores suit file names and code identifiers. You can pick either, or another symbol, in the Separator box.
How are accents and special characters handled?
Accents on Latin letters are removed, so é becomes e and ñ becomes n. Letters such as ß, æ and ø are converted to ss, ae and o. Punctuation and symbols are removed, apostrophes are dropped, and & becomes and.
Does it work with non-Latin alphabets?
By default the slug uses only a-z and 0-9, so text in Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or Chinese would give an empty result. Turn on Keep letters from other alphabets to keep those letters in the slug. Most modern browsers and CMSs handle such URLs, but older systems may encode them.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The slug is generated in your browser, on your own device. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored.
