Why use an online word counter?
Whether you are a student writing an essay, a professional crafting a report, or a social media manager preparing a post, keeping track of your text length is crucial. Our free online word and character counter provides instant, real-time metrics to ensure your content meets specific length requirements without the need for complex software.
Understanding the Metrics
Words
A word is any group of characters separated by spaces that contains at least one letter or number. Hyphenated terms like "well-known" count as one word, and stray punctuation such as a lone dash doesn't add to the total.
Characters
Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji counts as one. The main figure includes spaces and line breaks; the "no spaces" figure in the detailed statistics leaves out all whitespace. Handy for meta descriptions or any form field with a character cap.
Sentences
Text is split into sentences at periods, question marks, exclamation marks, and line breaks. Abbreviations such as "Mr." can occasionally be mistaken for the end of a sentence, as with any automatic counter.
Paragraphs
Each line of text that is separated by a line break counts as a paragraph. Blank lines are ignored, so extra spacing between paragraphs won't inflate the number.
Reading and speaking time
Estimated from your word count at about 238 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud. These are typical averages, so real timings vary with the reader, the speaker, and the material.
Keyword density
Shows the words you use most often and the share of your text each one makes up. Only words used at least twice are listed, and common English words like "the" and "and" are left out so the list highlights meaningful terms.
