How PDF Unlocking Works

A password-protected PDF is encrypted, and the password is the key. To unlock a PDF, the tool uses your password to work out that key, decrypts the content, and saves a new copy with the encryption removed. This is the same step your PDF viewer performs when you open the file.

1. Add the locked PDF

Drop the file onto the upload area or choose it from your device. The tool checks that it is a real PDF and whether it needs a password.

2. Enter the password

Type the password you use to open the file. It is checked against the PDF's own encryption data, right in your browser.

3. Download the unlocked copy

If the password is right, the tool decrypts the PDF and saves a new copy with the password removed. Your original file is never changed.

Password Requirements

You need the correct password. The tool does not guess, crack or bypass anything, and a wrong password simply shows an error. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check capital letters and spaces. The show/hide button helps you confirm what you typed.

Open (user) password

The password asked for when you open the file. Enter it and the tool removes it, so the new copy opens without one.

Owner (permissions) password

Some PDFs open freely but block printing, copying or editing. Enter the owner password to remove those limits. If the owner password is empty, leave the box blank.

Unlock a PDF Without Uploading It

Everything happens in your browser. Your PDF and its password are processed on your own device, so neither is uploaded, logged or stored on a server. That matters for contracts, bank statements, ID scans and other documents you wouldn't want to send to a stranger's website. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

Supported PDF Types

Standard encryption

PDFs protected with a password using RC4 (40 or 128-bit) or AES (128 or 256-bit), which covers files from Acrobat, Word, Preview, Chrome and most other tools.

Any content

Text, scans, forms and images all come through unchanged. Pages are copied as they are, so quality does not drop.

Up to 100 MB

One file at a time, up to 100 MB. Certificate-based encryption and files that are damaged can't be unlocked.

Works on Mobile and Desktop

The tool works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. On a touchscreen, the password box uses a comfortable text size, so your phone won't zoom in, and the show/hide button is easy to tap. On a computer, you can drag a PDF straight onto the upload area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I unlock a PDF online?
Add your password-protected PDF, type its password, and click Unlock PDF. When the password is correct, you can download a copy that opens without one.
Can I remove a PDF password if I don't know it?
No. This tool needs the correct password. It decrypts the file using that password, the same way a PDF viewer does, and it does not guess or crack passwords. If you have forgotten the password, ask the person who created the file.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read and decrypted in your browser, on your own device. Neither the file nor the password is uploaded, logged or stored, so it is safe to use with private documents.
What does the unlocked PDF look like?
The same as the original. Pages, text, images and links are copied across without being re-drawn, and the only change is that the encryption is gone. Your original file stays as it was.
Why does it say my PDF isn't password-protected?
The file has no encryption, so it already opens without a password and there is nothing to remove. If it won't open in your viewer for another reason, the file may be damaged.
What if my PDF opens but I can't print or copy from it?
That file has an owner password that restricts what you can do. Enter the owner password to remove the restrictions. If it was set with an empty password, leave the box empty and click Unlock PDF.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The password box and the show/hide button are sized for touch, and the whole tool runs in your mobile browser with nothing to install. Large PDFs may take a little longer on older phones.
